Professor Robert O. Ritchie is a leading international scientist in the field of fatigue and fracture of materials, with a distinguished record of research on the fracture mechanics of structural, ceramic, and biological materials. He has been a researcher and associate professor at the University of Cambridge and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and since 1981 a professor at the University of California, Berkeley and  senior faculty scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He has been a member of the National Academy of Engineering since 2001, a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering since 2002, and a Foreign Member of the Royal Society since 2018. He has served as editor or associate editor of more than a dozen academic journals. He has a long history of research in material fracture and has made significant achievements in the areas of fracture and fatigue of conventional and biological materials and bionic materials development. He has published more than 800 papers, including many papers in Science, Nature, Nature Materials, and Advanced Materials, he has edited more than 15 books, including a recent co-authored textbook on fracture mechanics, and has an h-index of 105.
